Getting Started-
How I started with this whole snail mail hobby was through Instagram. I followed a few people and friends that were coincidentally into mail exchanges and letter writing. Seeing all their posts and interactions appealed to me and seemed like so much fun. It was something that I wanted to get into, so I took the leap and asked if they would be interested in doing a mail exchange with me as well. In the beginning I was such a total "rookie" and didn't really know what to expect or what to send or how to start off my letters, but I just winged it. And luckily, the people I followed and asked agreed and everything just blossomed from there. In time, you'll learn what your penpal likes and discover common interests, so it gets easier and more fun with each exchange.
Helpful Tip-
A little forewarning- Do not take on more penpals than what your schedule can handle. At the time, I had more free time so I was able to keep up with crafting mail packages for 5-7 friends. But as work got busier and more requests started coming in, I noticed that I got a little slower and behind on my responses which wasn't so cool. But in the end it worked out, because the ones that were really wanting to make that genuine connection with me kindly accepted my delay and continue to connect with me 'til this day. Kudos to them, and lucky for me for them being so understanding!
If you have an Instagram account but don't know where to start, try sifting through hashtags such as: #snailmail #mail #showandmail #snailmailrevolution #stationery #mailart #penpal #penpalswanted #postcard #postcrossing. I thought I'd also link some inspiring Instagram accounts that may help jump start the search and spark your interest. Hello! I've been wanting to have a penpal for the longest time and this post is really helpful. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad this was helpful for you!
DeleteI love your work. :) I've been following you (makes me sound like a stalker!) on IG.It's only now that I checked your blog and I am just blown away by how beautiful it is. I love pretty papers too. ever since I was a child I have been collecting stationeries, especially the ones from Korea and Japan. Those are so cute. Now that I'm a grown up I never did quite outgrew my love for paper. I still find myself buying notebooks, journals and stationeries.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work. I so enjoyed your blog. :)
Hi Liz! Thank you for your kind words and for checking out my blog! I truly appreciate it. I love Korean and Japanese stationery as well. They're my ultimate weakness. I have drawers full of them, but I'm not really sure if I'll ever use them. ha!
DeleteHello! have always been following people that does snailmail on instagram but never knew how to start. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome!
DeleteAnd don't take on new pen pals right before you move to the UK >.< I will send you a letter once we are a little bit better set up. I'm still looking for a job, but I hurt my feet so it's been a bit difficult.
ReplyDeleteIf you move to Korea I'll be begging to do an exchange for some chasu (차수) kits, I saw a demonstration and have desperately wanted to try it.

Don't worry! There's no rush. Plus, with me moving soon, I'll have a new address anyway.
DeleteOh, chasu kits? Yes!
Well, if you aren't moving until September we have some time to exchange letters.
DeleteI've always liked embroidery, I do some needlework and cross-stitch. There was a short mini series on one of the Arirang youtube channels about a lady who does chasu professionally, some of her pieces take her years to finish, working 8-10 hours a day.
One of my Korean teachers is in Korea right now and she said that she would bring me back a small chasu kit, hopefully it is easy, or I'll never be able to finish it >.<
